Chiaroscuro is an Italian term describing light and shadow. In art, Chiaroscuro is a technique or style that depicts a strong contrast between shadows and usually a single light source on a subject.

This inter-play of contrast between brightness and darkness provides a more immersive and three-dimensional viewing experience as it adds more depth and volume to an artwork.

Famous artists known for pioneering chiaroscuro are Leonardo Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Caravaggio and Rafael.
