A Diptych is usually a small-sized artwork made of two flat parts that are typically hinged together.  The artwork in most cases may be a painting, relief or carving.

Historically, diptychs were used for praying, especially when moving or travelling.  They were portable and foldable which provided protection to the religious or devotional artworks inside.

Nowadays, a diptych may sometimes also refer to two pieces that are next to each other and which together form a single piece of art.
