Expressionism focuses on self-expression of emotions and experiences rather than realistic depictions.  It is usually characterised by the use of distortion, exaggeration, intense colours and textures to convey the fears, desires or feelings of the artist.

Expressionist art started in the early 20th century as a response to traditional art forms and movements such as impressionism.  It also emerged as a result of the anxieties and concerns of World War I.  It quicky became a global trend and art style throughout the world including Germany, France & America.

Expressionism spans throughout many disciplines including painting, literature, architecture, music and performing arts.
