Fresco is a skilful technique whereby water-based paint is applied to wet plaster, typically on either a wall or ceiling.  This method of painting makes for a more durable artwork as the paint is absorbed directly into the plaster.

However, it requires the artist to paint the artwork fairly quickly, before the plaster dries up.  Paint applied to dry plaster or walls would be less durable and may be liable to peeling or flaking.

Some famous frescos include Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper and Raphael’s School of Athens.
