Hatching is a technique whereby lines are drawn to create shading effects or accentuate a particular drawing or artwork. The closer the lines the more intense or dark is the shading effect.  There are three main variations or types of Hatching.

  1. Linear-Hatching, which makes use of parallel lines.
  2. Cross-Hatching which uses crossing lines at different or opposing angles.
  3. Contour-Hatching which makes use of curved lines, usually to accentuate figures and subjects.

Other than being actively seen in drawings, Hatching is also used in sculptures and painting.  It further forms an integral part of structural and architectural design or planning.
