Description

‘Marsan Coco’ which is Mauritian Creole for Coconut Seller, is an acrylic painting by artist Sand from Mauritius.  It illustrates a man riding his bicycle with coconuts hanging on either side.  He is wearing a hat made out of straw and a famous local brand of flip-flops commonly known as ‘Savate Dodo’.

What makes this work of art special is that it immortalises part of the Mauritian culture which sadly has now mostly disappeared.  These men would often be found around the coastal region of the island and at every public beach in Mauritius.  Nowadays, though they are still seen, the bicycle has been ditched for pick-up trucks, vans or beach shacks instead.

This painting is a bright take on the history and culture of Mauritius.

In The Words Of The Artist

This artwork was painted to bring back memories of the golden days where coconut sellers used to ride their bicycle mostly in the coastal regions; A scene, once typical of our tropical island.
